FACILITATING ACADEMIC CAREERS IN ENGINEERING & SCIENCE

Ali Gordon
Ali P. Gordon is a PhD candidate in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). Mr. Gordon received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in mathematics from Morehouse College, and he obtained both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech. He is an active member of ASME and ASTM. To support his research activities, Mr. Gordon has received support from the GEM Master’s and PhD Fellowships, Ford Motor Company, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Georgia Tech’s Presidential Fellowship, an NSF-FACES Fellowship, the Georgia Space Grant, and General Electric Energy (formerly known as GE Power Systems). He is also a fellow of the Office of Naval Research.
Mr. Gordon’s research activities focus on the enhancement of prognostics and monitoring of either oxidized, corroded or coated components. As a researcher involved with Georgia Tech's Mechanical Properties Research Laboratory (MPRL), he conducts elevated temperature experiments on cast alloys used in power generation equipment. Based on the microscopic metallographic analyses of fatigue-tested materials, damage evolution and constitutive models are developed. These relations allow life prediction of materials undergoing various combinations of creep-fatigue-corrosion damage. Additionally, Mr. Gordon’s research interests include the improvement of coupled mass diffusion-creep constitutive models. These relations necessitate numerical simulation of fatigue and fracture as well as experimental verification.
