FACILITATING ACADEMIC CAREERS IN ENGINEERING & SCIENCE

Keith Reed
My name is Keith Gregory Reed and I am a current graduate student in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Georgia Tech, where I currently conduct research under the supervision of Dr. Carson Meredith in the area of advanced polymer thin film technology. My research involves developing and evaluating combinatorial tools for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells. Our group looks specifically at the membrane component of the fuel cell system and seeks to model/optimize proton exchange membrane characteristics such as mechanical integrity, steam permeability, and conductivity, with respect to properties such as processing temperature, reactant concentrations, and thickness. In addition to building analytical tools, we have also developed novel techniques for imposing property gradients within a single membrane. This “library” allows for us to test numerous property combinations without the hassle of generating multiple membranes, thus, reducing waste and saving time. My work is both challenging and exciting, which is why I look forward to the long-term pursuit of chemical engineering based research in both academia and industry, for resolving critical environmental issues.
