Georgia Tech was recently a
recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Education and
the Professoriate Grant. The goal of the award is to assist
universities in developing programs to increase the number of
minorities pursuing advanced degrees in engineering and science.
In particular, the program will aim to increase the number of
underrepresented students pursuing careers in academia. One facet
of this program is the FACES Career Initiation Grant. The program
will provide two $30,000 "Career Initiation Grants" to promising
doctoral graduate students that accept a tenure track faculty
position in engineering or science related field at a U.S.
college or university. These funds are intended to assist newly
minted Ph.D's at an early stage in their academic careers. The
grant can be used to purchase research equipment, and support
graduate and/or undergraduate researchers.
Eligibility: To be
eligible, you must fulfill the following requirements;
·
Currently-enrolled
doctoral students in the College or Engineering or the College of
Sciences
·
Must complete
doctoral degrees by September 1, 2006 or who have completed
their degrees within the past five years
·
Must have job
commitment by December 31, 2006
·
U.S. Citizen
Deadline: Applications
are due to Dr. Reginald DesRoches by March 26, 2006.
Application: The
application form must be accompanied by: 1) a career development
plan (4 page maximum), 2) a resume, and 3) two letters of
recommendation (one must be from a faculty member).
The career development plan should
be a clear statement of the nature and implementation of the
integrated research and education goals and activities during the
initial five-year period of employment as a professor. Plans in
both area should be specific and directly related to the
applicants career goals. Applicants are encouraged to describe a
range of planned activities that include research and education
activities that move beyond routine education and service
responsibilities. Educational activities can include designing
new materials and practices, and/or adapting and implementing
effective educational materials and practices developed
elsewhere. A discussion of the relationship between the research
and education aspects should be included as evidence of an
integrated career-development plan.
This
section should present:
·
Objectives and
significance of the proposed integrated research and teaching
activities;
·
The relation of the
research to the current state of knowledge in the field, and of
the education activities to the current state of knowledge on
effective teaching and learning in one's discipline;
·
An outline of the
work plan, describing the methods and procedures to be used and
including an evaluation of the education activities; and
·
A summary of prior
research and education accomplishments
Evaluation and Notification:
The FACES steering committee will carefully review and evaluate
all applications and make recommendations to the dean of
engineering. In mid-March, the winners and two runners-up will be
notified. This should allow the winning candidates sufficient
lead-time to leverage the grants as they interview for faculty
positions. In the event that a winning candidate accepts
employment in a non-academic position or has not secured a faculty
position by Dec 31, 2002, the grant will be awarded to the first
runner-up.
